Whistler XTR-140 – An Inexpensive Radar/Laser Detector That Cannot Be Beaten For The Price
68Most people drive slightly over the speed limit, but not by much, maybe at 5-10 kmph over the speed limit. But this speed differential is enough for them to get caught in a speed trap and they end up having to pay a $150 fine – not so good for the bank balance!

With full price radar detectors such as the Beltronics V995 coming with a price tag of $500 dollars in some cases they represent a large barrier if you would like to test one out.
The Whistler XTR 140 could be just what you are looking for if you want to get your first radar detector without having to break the bank. With a price tag of just over 40 odd dollars, it compares well with the Cobra 9545 it is easily affordable for most people and represents a gateway into the type of product that can save you money in the long run – by just preventing one speeding ticket the cost of the Whistler will have been paid in full.
What you get for your money
The XTR 140 features the usual mcgubbins that most other radar detectors have – full multi band detection, including laser, radar, X band and so on, and it can detect safety signals from emergency vehicles too. The main feature that the Whistler has that most other detectors do not have is the dual led periscope, which is a fancy way to say that it has two very bright blue LED’s on top of the unit that flash whenever a speed threat is detected, instantly alerting the driver to the danger of getting a speeding fine. With this feature it is almost impossible to miss the alert coming from the Whistler – you would have to be blind to do so!
City Mode and Other Stuff
Of course, the unit also comes with a switch to set it between city mode and the normal, default, mode – the city mode makes the unit filter out more signals so that you get less false positives while driving through a busy urban area. Such is the low price of the XTR 140 Whistler, false positives are admittedly a little bit more frequent than rival models such as the Escort range of detectors, but when you consider that the price is a tenth of what these super pro models cost, a little bit more inaccuracy is to be expected! Apart from this the range is slightly less than a $500 model, but it is still good enough to detect speed traps to give you more than enough time to slow down if you are going 5to 10 kmph over the speed limit, saving you $150 on the spot!
The dashboard mount also has a quick release built into the holder so that you can quickly release the unit and safely store it in the dash, preventing thieves from noticing the detector and trying to steal it!
A Great Detector For the Price
When it comes to ease of use, detection rates and reliability, the Whistler cannot be beaten for the cost. If you are looking for a good quality entry level radar detector, the Whistler XTR 140 is one of the best!
